Workplace trauma is any critical incident experienced by personnel, producing intense emotional reactions that have the potential to interfere with job functions. These are events with circumstances so unusual or so distressing as to produce immediate or delayed emotional reactions that surpass the normal coping mechanisms of employees. Examples of critical incidents include:

• The serious injury, illness, or unexpected death of an employee Violent or catastrophic events such as shootings, assaults, accidents or natural disasters, or a perceived threat of such an event
• Any distressing occurrence attracting unusual media attention.

• provide immediate and appropriate support to individuals and groups directly affected by the event
• evaluate and address needs of employees peripherally affected by the event
• assist management and supervisors to be prepared to respond to a traumatic incident and to assess potential detrimental consequences affecting management, organizational procedures, and organizational culture, and
• design and implement procedures to stabilize the organization to prevent the potential aftermath of reduced work performance and impaired morale.

Critical incident planning: consultation regarding organizational policies and procedures for handling violence or threats of violence in the workplace and for defining and responding to critical incidents. In the event that there is a critical incident or potentially critical incident, HPS provides immediate phone consultation to plan and initiate a response to the incident, including, if appropriate, deployment and supervision of an onsite Critical Incident Response counselor or team of counselors.

Critical event counseling and education: HPS provides on site critical event counseling and education services drawing upon our panel of counselors or other qualified and experienced professionals as appropriate to the incident. Services are provided on site in continued both group and individual sessions. HPS provides educational handouts to support and reinforce these services.

Training Services: HPS provides supervisor and employee group training and education services on topics such as

• supervisory role in critical incidents
• adapting to change
• stress managment
• conflict resolution
• critical incident stress and debriefing
• grief and loss
• dealing with difficult people
• anger in the workplace
• violence in the workplace, and other similar topics that are of relevance and priority.
