Drug-Free Workplace
An estimated 17% to 20% of workers use alcohol and drugs on the job! Seventy three percent of illegal drug users are employed!
These startling statistics mean that all employers need to be concerned about the impact of drugs and alcohol. Employees with alcohol and other drug problems cost U.S. employers billions of dollars in lost productivity and increased expenses. According to one study, in comparison with other employees, a typical employee experiencing problems with alcohol or other drug use:
- Was late 3 times more often
- Requested time off 2.2 times more often
- Used 3 times the normal level of sick benefits
- Was 5 times more likely to file a worker's compensation claim and
- Was involved in accidents 3.6 times more often
And of course, there are other costs, less easily quantified that may include poor customer service, errors in judgment, time lost by coworkers, decreased productivity, and other similar consequences. Yet it is costly and difficult to fire, hire and retrain or replace an experienced and qualified employee. Many companies find it preferable, more humane and more effective to promote a drug and alcohol abuse program which emphasizes prevention and rehabilitation.
Human Performance Solutions offers employers training, consultation and substance abuse professional services to help create a drug free workplace and to satisfy the Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements for Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) services. One or more of the following program elements can be provided in coordination with the DOT Compliance Program or DOT approved laboratory testing program and Medical Review Officer (MRO) of your choice:
- Training and Consultation For managers/supervisors: DOT regulation or company program overview, testing protocols, referral procedures, employee supervision and drug education.
- For employees: Program requirements and drug education.
Substance Abuse Professional Services For employees identified as testing positive for alcohol and/or controlled substances, or who meet other provisions of the DOT regulations, services include: comprehensive evaluation, development of treatment recommendations and treatment planning, appropriate community referrals, follow-up evaluation and compliance monitoring.
Human Performance Solutions (HPS) provides Substance Abuse Professional services through its panel of Employee Assistance Program providers. All are experienced, qualified, licensed and/or certified behavioral health practitioners who have training in substance abuse evaluation and treatment protocols, and understand workplace issues and employment considerations. Each carries professional liability insurance and is certified in accordance with the Department of Transportation regulations.
HPS Substance Abuse Professional services include:
- Comprehensive Evaluation: Within 48 hours of receiving notification of a positive test result, an appointment will be arranged with a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) with specialty training in substance abuse evaluation and treatment. The evaluation will be conducted face-to-face utilizing proven and reliable substance abuse assessment tools, which include an in-depth alcohol and drug use history, standard psycho-social history and clinical assessment of associated health, work, family, and personal problems.
- Treatment Recommendations and Treatment Planning: Based on the comprehensive evaluation, a determination will be made regarding the employee's need for assistance with an alcohol or drug problem. For employees who need assistance, an education and/or treatment plan will be developed that will include appropriate referral and future testing recommendations. HPS will provide a written report to the employer specifying the recommended treatment or education plan (or follow up evaluation) that must be successfully complied with in order for the employee to return to work safely.
- Referral Services: referral of the employee to the most appropriate treatment program is vital. The type of referral should be consistent with the employee's needs and clinical evaluation. Considerations will be given to the employee's insurance coverage or ability to pay for care, other employer or community sponsored treatment resources and organizational policies regarding leave. HPS maintains a current knowledge of and close working relationships with available community programs and their staffs. The HPS Program Director will facilitate the referral and implementation of the treatment plan. For coordination of care, the HPS treatment plan with assessment information will be transmitted to the selected treatment provider.
- Follow up Evaluations: The SAP will evaluate the employee's success in fulfilling the requirements of the treatment plan and provide the employer with a brief verification report. If the employee successfully completes treatment, HPS can assist the employer to make effective decisions regarding the employee's return to safe productive work.
- Compliance Monitoring: Cooperation and compliance by the employee with the educational/treatment plan is essential for successful return to work. The HPS Program Director will keep the employer's designated DOT program coordinator informed regarding employee compliance, treatment progress and return-to-work needs. The HPS Program Director will work closely with treatment programs to monitor compliance, reassess needs, and modify the treatment plan when necessary. After return to work, HPS will additionally monitor compliance with any recommended after care programs in order to support the employee's continued recovery and to assist the employer in resolving any on-going return-to-work issues.
